League of Legends Worlds Analysis, Quarterfinals - SHR vs. EDG, Pre-Game

Star Horn Royal Club vs. Edward Gaming

Picks and Bans – Star Horn Royal Club

Lee Sin, Ryze/Irelia, and Orianna seem to be some of SHR's strongest choices and should be very sought after by SHR. The good news is, that though EDG do play these champions, they are not nearly as high priority (except for maybe Lee Sin) and SHR can either expect to get these champions, or have them banned. I really expect Lee Sin and Orianna to see the highest ban priority for EDG, at least at the start. The ADC's are also very different, SHR preferring the late game scaling champions like Tristana/Vayne or using Caitlyn as a lane bully or tower pushing beast. They have not made any real move towards the more mid-game/lane bully champions like Lucian/Corki or the pick ability of Twitch.

SHR should focus on getting either Insec or Corn the champion of their choice in jungle/mid respectively. If there are multiple champions that either are comfortable in play, then a first/early pick of Ryze will be optimal. Support picks or even an ADC pick in the middle of the table should give SHR time to formulate a strategy.

Ban out Maokai, as Koro1 from EDG will play him every game and has not shown much prowess elsewhere. Twitch would also be another solid ban, and Rengar/Zilean as well. Outside of that, generic bans until watching how the series goes. I'm not sure that there is any one player to try to ban out on EDG, as none of them looked extremely strong during the group stages.

Picks and Bans – Edward Gaming

EDG haven't show any superior strength onto anyone during the group stages. A heavy preference to Maokai and Rengar, but I wouldn't go into the matches making plans around these two, as they will most likely be banned out. If possible, nab these up as they have been EDG's most consistent champions. Twitch can be a focus as well for EDG, perhaps Koro1 or U can play Kayle for solid Twitch composition. Regardless, I'm not really sure what EDG are going to do or can do, from what they have shown in the group stages and perhaps should focus on counter-picking SHR rather than crafting their own strategy.

The standard ban style is to pick on Insec, by banning out his jungle and forcing him onto something rougher to play. Lee Sin for certain, followed by Rengar and Khazix. If EDG have a pocket jungle pick this can be a strategy, otherwise I might let this go, aside form banning/picking away Lee Sin. I'd like to see EDG ban out Orianna in every game unless they plan to pick her, as Corn is highly proficient on her and is probably his best champion. In the top lane, ban out Irelia if you plan to play Ryze or Rumble or potentially even Kayle. However that can leave Ryze up for SHR to grab.

Play-styles – Star Horn Royal Club

SHR play a very methodical game. They put a lot of focus onto towers and onto objectives and in group stages were one of the few teams to pull out Caitlyn for fast tower pushing and 2v1 lane swap fast pushes. SHR have shown that they will play the turret game and bypass the other team as well as playing solid team-fight compositions.

Generally SHR will play for the late game, making good plays in the mid-game to get a lead and then slowly starving out their opponents as they tighten their grip for the win. SHR do not however, hesitate and will close out a game as soon as they know they can.

Expect to see solid play throughout the game with most games SHR making safe plays, not risky ones. This can hurt them if they ever fall behind, as they won't make many moves to come back.

Play-styles – Edward Gaming

EDG like to brawl and will make some very aggressive plays, often times way to aggressive and it gets them killed for it. They will often bypass objectives to go for fights and kills and this sets them up for long games that they don't close out. In Group stages they missed a lot of opportunities to push turrets or objectives and get gold advantages that way, rather choosing to fight very brawl style engages that they may not even come out on top in.

I'm not sure what else we will see from EDG, they took Group Stages so lightly and made a bad showing of it. Hopefully they have come up with some new stuff for the quarterfinals.

Strengths and Weaknesses – Star Horn Royal Club

It has to be said that one form of weakness is their ability to communicate due to the three languages that they speak and their reliance on Smart Pings. There can be a breakdown in play because of this when one person sees a mistake happening but cannot communicate it in time. However there is a certain strength to this as well, as for SHR often times its Go Go Go and the whole team goes.

SHR's bot lane shows some vulnerabilities in that they love to push and stay pushed. SHR as a whole like to keep pushed up, and while this creates a certain map strength, it can leave lanes, especially bottom, vulnerable to gank opportunities.

The one other thing I can note, is that Corn does not seem comfortable on assassin champions and forcing him onto one may yield results for EDG

Strengths and Weaknesses – Edward Gaming

I find brawl centric styles of play to be a weakness as it will often draw out the game longer than necessary and lead to a lot of potentially punishable mistakes and missed opportunities to nab an objective for the bigger picture. Objectives seem to be more of a prize for winning a fight rather than an active area of focus. This does however, make the individual players strong when in this chaotic extended fight style and if they can draw SHR into it, EDG can take the lead in being used to this play.

If EDG do not get to brawl, however, or SHR craft a team that is very good at fighting as a team against the brawling strategy, EDG are going to have a very hard time.

And to note, in the Group stages EDG did say they were not focused on the matches, but rather towards the quarterfinals. This mindset really really hurt them in group stages and is almost a self-defeating prophecy. If you want to win, have the mindset to win. I do expect EDG to be having a good mindset for this stage of Worlds, however they should have come to the group stages that way and since they didn't, it will effect how good they are as opposed to how good they could have been for the quarterfinals.

What Star Horn Royal Club should do to win -

I think SHR have this in the bag. EDG can and may throw them for a loop with some picks and ban strategies, however SHR seem the much stronger team. Ban out Maokai and force Koro1 onto something uncomfortable. Keep Clearlove off of Rengar, and then prepare a team able to fight in the mid-game. Once past the mid-game and the brawl chaos of EDG, move as a team and focus on objectives and keeping EDG down.

React accordingly during the series, spotting out what EDG has been working on and force them back onto the champions they gave a mediocre showing on in Groups.

What Edward Gaming should do to win -

Keep Lee Sin and Orianna away from SHR. Be aware of the top lane Irelia counter-pick and go from there. EDG will have to draw SHR into their chaotic fights. Lots of jungle skirmishes and champions that are good at them. Keep SHR constantly in response mode, even if its risky and a bit fool hardy. Do not give SHR time to regroup in games and communicate.

Other than that, whatever you've been hiding/working on EDG, bring that out.
